First Aid for CITB-Registered Levy-Exempt Employers

Purpose & Scope

To equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to manage workplace first aid emergencies, in line with HSE guidance L74 and the Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

Content Overview

  • Common first aid incidents on construction sites and offices
  • Legal duties of employers, self-employed, and first aiders
  • Role of the first aider: infection control, incident recording, equipment use, situation assessment, and emergency response
  • First aid kits, materials, and facilities
  • Relevant regulations and legal updates
  • First aid procedures for:
    • Unconscious casualties (including seizures)
    • CPR and defibrillator use
    • Choking, bleeding (minor and catastrophic), shock, and temperature-related conditions
    • Minor injuries (cuts, grazes, bruises, burns, scalds, splinters)
    • Injuries to bones, joints, spine, chest, eyes, head; burns; poisoning; chemical inhalation; anaphylaxis
    • Major illnesses: heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes

Duration

Minimum: 3 days (6 hours/day)

Operatives, supervisors, managers, and leaders in construction

  • None

Delivery Format

  • Online or classroom-based

Renewal & Refresher

  • Mandatory 2-day renewal every 3 years
  • Annual refresher recommended by HSE

Assessment

Practical or written test with pass/fail criteria

  • Participants will be able to:

    • Identify workplace first aid incidents
    • Understand legal responsibilities
    • Perform essential first aid techniques
    • Recognize symptoms of major illnesses and respond appropriately
