Purpose & Scope
To equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to manage workplace first aid emergencies, in line with HSE guidance L74 and the Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.
Content Overview
- Common first aid incidents on construction sites and offices
- Legal duties of employers, self-employed, and first aiders
- Role of the first aider: infection control, incident recording, equipment use, situation assessment, and emergency response
- First aid kits, materials, and facilities
- Relevant regulations and legal updates
- First aid procedures for:
- Unconscious casualties (including seizures)
- CPR and defibrillator use
- Choking, bleeding (minor and catastrophic), shock, and temperature-related conditions
- Minor injuries (cuts, grazes, bruises, burns, scalds, splinters)
- Injuries to bones, joints, spine, chest, eyes, head; burns; poisoning; chemical inhalation; anaphylaxis
- Major illnesses: heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes
Duration
Minimum: 3 days (6 hours/day)

Operatives, supervisors, managers, and leaders in construction

- Online or classroom-based
Renewal & Refresher
- Mandatory 2-day renewal every 3 years
- Annual refresher recommended by HSE
Assessment
Practical or written test with pass/fail criteria
