What is the Traffic Marshal Course?
The Traffic Marshal (Banksman) course trains construction workers to safely direct and control vehicle and plant movements on site. Uncontrolled vehicle movements are one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatality on UK construction sites, making trained traffic marshals a CDM and HSE requirement.
The course covers both theory and practical elements, including the use of hand signals, hi-vis and communication equipment. On completion, delegates receive the Award in Traffic Marshal / Banksman, recognised by CITB and all major principal contractors.

- Legislation governing vehicle movements on site (CDM 2015, HSWA)
- Roles and responsibilities of the traffic marshal
- Planning and managing vehicle routes on site
- Standard hand signals and communication methods
- Use of hi-visibility clothing and safety equipment
- Interaction with plant operators and drivers
- Emergency procedures and incident reporting
- Reversing and loading/unloading safety
Assessment is by a written test and practical observation.
