Mental Health First Aid

Purpose & Scope

To equip candidates with the skills to recognise mental health issues, provide first aid support, promote recovery, and guide individuals to appropriate services.

Content Overview

  • Understanding mental health and wellbeing factors (e.g. stress)
  • Common mental health issues: anxiety, depression, suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, substance misuse, psychosis
  • Recognising early warning signs
  • Applying the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan
  • Using interpersonal skills (e.g. active listening)
  • Responding to mental health crises to preserve life
  • Signposting to support (e.g. self-help, employer, NHS)
  • Supporting recovery
  • Reducing stigma and discrimination

Duration

Minimum: 2 days (6 hours/day)

Target Audience

Operatives and supervisors in the construction sector

Entry Requirements

  • None

Delivery Format

  • Online or classroom-based

Renewal & Refresher

  • No mandatory renewal
  • Recommended refresher every 3 years (aligned with HSE guidance)

Assessment

Trainer must confirm all learning outcomes are met
