Mental Health First Aid Champion

Purpose & Scope

To prepare candidates to act as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Champions—individuals equipped to recognise mental ill health, support wellbeing, and promote mental health awareness in the workplace.

Content Overview

Champions will:

    • Understand common mental health issues
    • Spot early signs of mental ill health
    • Support positive mental wellbeing
    • Advocate for mental health awareness

Session 1:

  • Introduction to MHFA
  • Mental health, stress, stigma, and discrimination
  • Overview of mental health conditions: depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis
  • Substance misuse and its impact on mental health
  • Recognising early warning signs

Entry Requirements

  • None

Session 2:

  • MHFA Action Plan:
    1. Approach, assess, and assist in crisis
    2. Listen non-judgmentally
    3. Provide support and information
    4. Encourage professional help
    5. Encourage other supports
  • Suicide awareness
  • Recovery and workplace wellbeing
  • Action planning for MHFA roles

Duration

  • 1 day (7–8 hours)

Target Audience

Operatives and supervisors in construction

Delivery Format

  • Online or classroom-based

Renewal & Refresher

  • No mandatory renewal
  • Recommended refresher every 3 years (aligned with HSE guidance)

Assessment

Trainer must confirm all learning outcomes are met
